Cosmetic Fillers
General Description:
Facial filling plastic surgery offers a great option if you want to have a quick fix of the wrinkles in your face. These innovative filling techniques can also increase the volume and thickness of your lips, giving them a more sensual appearance. They can also shape your chin and cheekbones.
Benefits:
Facial filling improves the signs of fatigue, acne and the natural skin aging process. It also gives your face a rejuvenated look.
Technical Description:
There are many effective and secure biocompatible substances that have similar texture and elasticity than the body's connective tissue used to improve the appearance of your face. The physician will analyze your needs and requirements and will advise you on the type of filling to use. Deepness and quantity of filling will vary according to your skin type and problems you want to correct. In general, the products injected have certain substances your skin naturally produces but that have been deteriorating by external factors and time. One example of this is hyaluronic acid. We only use products that have been approved by the FDA.
Hospitalization:
This is an ambulatory procedure.
BoTox
General Description:
Botox aims to eliminate wrinkles in the face, commonly called crow's feet or wrinkles between the eyebrows. They are marks left in the skin by the repetition of a muscular movement or gesture.
Benefits:
If you want to look younger, BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) is what you need because it helps to reduce lines of expressions. An additional benefit for people who suffer from headaches caused by the face's permanent muscular contraction, especially during stressful times, is that pain usually disappears after the muscles are relaxed.
Technical Description:
Butulinum toxin (commercially known as BOTOX®) has been therapeutically used for more than 20 years, and for 8 years in the fields of cosmetic and plastic surgery.
To apply this treatment, the patient must be sitting. The idea is to inject small quantities of BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) in the area where wrinkles appear. To do this, the plastic surgeon will ask you to contract the muscles that will be treated and he will inject the substance using a very thin needle.
The effects of BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) can be perceived from 5 to 10 days after the injection; the effect lasts for 4 or 6 months. Wrinkles gradually improve in a 12-week period; nevertheless, this period might vary depending on the patient. Once BOTOX® is injected, you must remain horizontally during 4 hours so the toxin can be distributed and it can begin to have effects in the area where the nerve connects to the muscle. Once the effects disappear, you can repeat the treatment. It has been proved that the bigger the amount of injections, the bigger the period during which the effects can be perceived.
After two weeks from the first treatment you can have another session of injections; this allows the surgeon to locate any resistance from the muscles. Around 90% or more patients positively respond to BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A). So, there is 10% who do not respond to this treatment.
The success of this treatment lies in the muscles' inability to tighten, which begins between 24 and 48 hours after the injection. The maximum weakening of the muscle can be determined in seven days. The paralysis of the muscle after the first injection lasts between four and seven months in most patients. Even though there is no reported childbirth abnormalities related to this treatment, our policy is not to treat pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patients with record of neuromuscular conditions (multiple sclerosis and/or severe myasthenia) or other neurotransmission-related conditions must avoid this procedure.
Hospitalization: This is an ambulatory procedure.
Chemical Peel
General Description:
Chemical peeling uses different chemical substances on the skin to "peel" or exfoliate its external layers. If you want to improve the look of skin that has been damaged by the sun, minimize wrinkles, improve the look of scars, acne or chickenpox spots and decolorate or eliminate stains, chemical peeling is what you need.
Technical Description:
Chemical peeling gets rid of as many skin layers as the substance allows. The deeper it goes, the greater the risks. This procedure is generally performed in the face.
Chemical substances used are:
- Trichloroacetic acid
- Salicilic acid
- Golden Peeling Plus (Jessner plus resorcine)
- Kojic acid
- Retinoic acid among others
Hospitalization:
Chemical peeling is an ambulatory procedure.
Time:
Time needed for the procedure will depend on the amount of skin treated and the substance used. It varies between 10 minutes and two hours.
MICRO-DERMABRASION
Microdermabrasion, a type of dermabrasion, is one of the facial procedures we offer. It is a quick exfoliation therapy to remove dead cells from the skin's superficial layer. Benefits: Microdermabrasion will leave your skin looking younger and healthy. This type of treatment is a good alternative for your finances, since you will not have to spend a lot of money on more invasive and expensive treatments. The aging of the skin affects younger people too, so there is no specific age group that can benefit from microdermabrasion. This technique is used to prevent health problems in younger people as well as to improve the appearance of older ones.
Technical Description:
Microdermabrasion is a procedure to project aluminum micro crystals in the skin's superficial layer. These particles gently remove skin layers from the very beginning. Compared with treatments like chemical peeling, this technique offers more visible results. The combination of exfoliation, soft suction and compression, stimulate new cells at the base of the skin. Through this process, cells are rejuvenated and circulation increases. The result is a fresh and healthy looking skin with more elasticity and texture.
Hospitalization:
Microdermabrasion is an ambulatory procedure.
Time:
Time required for each treatment is:
| Face: | 20 minutes. |
| Neck and face: | 30 minutes. |
| Neck and upper breast area: | 40 minutes. |
PLASTIC SURGERY
Plastic surgery's popularity has increased considerably lately. Our JCI Accredited Hospital, responding to new medical and aesthetic demands, has at your service a group of qualified professionals specialized in the newest surgical treatments. The specialists in cosmetic plastic surgery have a lot of experience in procedures that aim to enhance your potential beauty and wellness (cosmetic surgery) or correct malformations or problems caused by different situations (reconstructive surgery). In our team, there are eight specialized surgeons and dermatologists who have ample experience and skill in new procedures for all parts of the body.
Face Lift
Benefits:
The best candidates for a facelift are those whose face, neck (or both) have begun to hang, but whose skin still has some elasticity. This type of cosmetic plastic surgery is more beneficial for people who have a strong and well-defined bone structure.
Technical Description:
During a facelift, the surgeon will separate fat from muscles in the area where the surgery will be performed. Then, the fat is removed and the skin is placed again, taking out the leftover skin.
EYEBROW LIFT / FOREHEAD LIFT
Eyebrow and Forehead lifting is a type of plastic surgery improves sagging skin in forehead, eyebrows and upper eyelids. Muscles and skin that show signs of aging are altered: drooping of the eyebrows, excess eyelid skin and wrinkles in forehead caused by constant movements.
Technical Description:
Local anesthesia and sedatives are normally used to avoid pain, though the patient remains awake. Some people request general anesthesia so they do not have to be conscious during surgery. It is possible to suffer from some stretching of the skin in the forehead and occasional discomfort.
For your wellness, hair must be kept out of the operation area; the hair close to the incision area must be cut; head is not shaved. Then, the incision is made at ear level and continues through the upper forehead close to the hairline so as to avoid the effect of a very wide forehead. If the patient is bold or suffers from alopecia, the surgeon can perform an incision in the scalp's middle line so as to avoid leaving a visible scar.
During surgery, the skin is lift and measured to remove the excess of tissue, skin and muscle. The incision is closed with stitches or pins and, before applying the dressing, blood and any other particles are removed from the face to avoid scalp irritation.
BEPHAROPLASTY (EYELID SURGERY)
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a type of plastic surgery to improve your wellness by removing excess fat, muscle and skin form upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can correct drooping upper eyelids sagging in lower ones that make older people look more tired that they really are and that can also compromise eyesight.
There are certain medical conditions that make eyelid surgery more risky: thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism or Graves disease, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems and diabetes, among others.
Benefits:
Ideal candidates for this procedure are those people who are healthy, psychologically stable and realistic about their expectations.
Technical Description:
Like in any other wellness program that involves surgery, there are some risks involved. Nevertheless, these risks can be minimized if you consult a plastic surgeon and follow his recommendations accordingly. Minor complications can be inflammation and double or blurry vision. After this cosmetic surgery, some patients might experience temporary difficulty to close their eyes while sleeping. Another complication, rare if a good physician was involved, is ectropion or eyelid eversion, that is, the eyelid is turned outwards.
The first consultation is extremely important. Your physician should have a complete record of your medical background. Be honest; mention all your diseases, allergies, and medicine intake or tobacco consumption. Discuss your expectations and do not hesitate to ask when in doubt.
The plastic surgeon will explain all surgical procedures, the type of anesthesia needed and the costs. Blepharoplasty is generally performed with local anesthesia and oral or endovenous sedation, though some doctors prefer general anesthesia.
RHINOPLASTY (NOSE SURGERY)
Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. This technique can:
- Reduce or increase the nose size.
- Change the shape of tip or side.
- Narrow the nostrils.
- Change the angle between your nose and upper lip.
Benefits:
Rhinoplasty can improve your appearance and make you feel better about yourself. Before considering this surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your physician.
Technical Description:
When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified surgeon, complications are few and minor. Nevertheless, like in any surgical procedure, there is the risk of complications such as infection, bleeding or reaction to anesthesia. You can reduce the risks to the minimum if you follow your doctor's instructions both before and after surgery. If rhinoplasty is performed through the nostrils, scars are not visible. Open rhinoplasty will leave a small, almost invisible scar at the base of the nose.
For all types of cosmetic surgery, it is mandatory to keep the communication channels open between you and your physician; nose surgery is no exception. In your first consultation, the surgeon will ask you the changes you want to make and then will examine your face and discuss the real surgical possibilities for your case.
For your wellness, the rhinoplasty surgeon will tell you all factors that could affect the procedure and the results. Those factors are nostril and cartilage structure, the shape of your face, skin thickness and, above all, your expectations. The physician will also let you know the type of anesthesia used, location and cost. Anesthesia might be general or local, depending in the procedure or the surgeon's choice.
Honesty with your physician is of extreme important. Let him know if you have previously had nose surgery, even though it was many years ago. It is important to let him know if you experience difficulties when breathing, if you have allergies, if you smoke or take vitamins or some medication.
CHIN IMPLANT
Cosmetic chin surgery is a procedure that aims to choose the right size of your chin according to your face morphology to improve your wellness. Incision might be made at the lower lip's oral mucose level or at chin level. A bag is created to place the implant above the jawbone in the mentonian region.
Benefits:
Chin implant accounts for a better balance between your profile and neck.
Technical Description:
In this plastic surgery, the phycisian will choose, following your face structure, the right implant size to make your profile look better. Incision can be made at the lower lip's oral mucose level or at chin level. Once the incision is made and a "bag" is created, the implant is placed inside, immediately above the jawbone in the mentonian region.
Time:
The plastic surgery procedure needed to place a chin implant (prosthesis) can take from 30 minutes to one hour.
CHEEK IMPLANTS (MALAR)
Cheek implant surgery takes anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. It requires a single procedure; incisions are made at intra-oral level in the upper level mucous membrane, where a snug pocket is created at cheekbone level to place it. Recovery from this surgery varies depending on the procedure followed. Inflammation and discomfort are normal after surgery, though these symptoms disappear in a few days and can be treated with analgesics and anti-inflammatory. It is important that you follow the post-surgery instructions given by the physician.
Benefits:
End results will be seen after a few weeks or months. People not noticing your implant will surprise you. They will just tell you look different or better.
Technical Description:
When this plastic surgery is performed at the same time than other facial rejuvenation surgery (ritidectomy, blepharoplasty, frontoplasty) the implant will be placed through the incisions opened for those interventions. On the contrary, if the implant is a single procedure, incisions will be at intra-oral level in the upper lip mucous membrane to create a "bag" for the implant.
Time:
Cosmetic surgery to place cheek implants takes from 40 minutes to an hour.
BREAST ENLARGEMENT
Breast enlargement, technically called enlargement mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the size and shape of female breasts. Before undertaking this surgery, carefully think about your expectations and discuss them with your physician.
Benefits:
Best candidates for surgery are individuals who want to improve their physical appearance.
Technical Description:
Enlargement mammoplasty is a relatively safe surgery. Nevertheless, there are risks, like in any other surgical procedure. Breast enlargement surgery might cause capsular contracture around the implant as a way for the organism to fight a foreign body. This capsule presses the implant, which causes the breast to harden. Capsular contracture can be treated in many ways. Sometimes it will be necessary to remove or open the capsule and other times the implant has to be replaced or taken out.
Health problems, like in any other type of surgery, might arise: excessive bleeding can cause pain and inflammation. If bleeding does not stop, the patient must be operated to remove blood. A small percentage of women might develop infection around the implant. In these cases, the implant should be removed for several months until infection stops, and then, a new implant will be placed.
Some people experience increase or loss of sensibility around the nipples, but these symptoms usually disappear very fast. There is no evidence that breast enlargement affects fertility, pregnancy, breastfeeding or that it can cause cancer. Rupture could also occur. You should be aware of changes in shape and consistency. Like a consequence, the patient will be operated to replace the implant.
Some people have experienced symptoms similar to the ones caused by diseases in the immune system, like scleroderma or other arthritic-related. These symptoms can include pain or swollen joints, fever, fatigue or breast pain. Scientific studies around the world have not shown a direct relationship between silicon implants and these alterations in the connective tissue.
In your first consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your physical condition and will explain the appropriate technique for you taking into consideration your breasts and skin pigmentation. Discuss your expectations with your physician. Be honest; let him know whether you smoke, take medication, vitamins or use any drugs. The plastic surgeon should also let you know the type of anesthesia needed, the facilities provided and cost. Since insurance companies do not consider breast enlargement a medically necessary procedure, they do not cover the costs.
Hospitalization:
Breast enlargement is an ambulatory surgical procedure, so make sure someone goes with you to help you get home afterwards (NewYouCR will take care of any needs you have).
BREAST REDUCTION
Plastic surgery of this type is an option for women and men who have big and/or hanging breasts. For women, over time bras can leave marks in women's shoulders that can cause health problems ranging from pain in the back and neck, skin irritation or even deformities in bones and respiratory problems. Besides, big breasts can make a people feel uncomfortable about themselves, something that could negatively affect your sense of security and self-worth.
Reduction mammoplasty is not a simple surgical procedure; nevertheless, risks are minimized if a qualified plastic surgeon performs the surgery.
Technical Description:
Like in any other type of surgical intervention, there is the risk of complications; they, however, can be reduced if you carefully follow your physician's instructions both before and after surgery. Breast reduction surgery leaves visible scars that can be hidden (smokers might have bigger scars). Some people also experience less sensibility in the nipples, but this will return to normal in a few weeks.
In your initial consultation you must be honest with your physician and go over your expectations with him. Your surgeon will evaluate your health, measure your breasts and decide which surgical procedure is best for you based on your age, breast size and shape and skin type. Your physician must carefully explain the procedure, possible risks, limitations, scars and new position of the nipple. The surgeon could request a mammography before surgery. He will advise you on food, beverages, cigarettes and whether you can take some vitamins or medication.
BREAST LIFT
Cosmetic plastic surgery with implants can help you lift your breasts. Mastopexy is a surgical technique that aims to reshape and lift hanging breasts. If your breasts are small or have lost volume over time, implants (prosthesis) might be the solution since they give the breast shape and firmness.
Benefits:
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity affect women's breasts. When the skin looses elasticity, breasts might beging to hang, their shape and firmness disappear.
Ideal candidates for this procedure are women who have small and hanging breasts, or men wishing to appear female. This does not mean that women with larger breasts cannot be operated; nevertheless, because of gravity results are less permanent.
Technical Description:
Even though there is no risk involved for breastfeeding, it is advised to postpone the procedure if you are considering having children.
SCLEROTHERAPY (Varicose Veins)
Health problems caused by varicose veins are completely eliminated without need for surgery, repose and without leaving scars. Through esclerotheraphy, the veins are injected, procedure that avoids all those complications.
Technical Description:
The leg's superficial veins are injected; this allows the blood to flow normally at deeper veins, the ones that normally carry 90% of the blood in legs and that could very well carry 100%. Your wellness is not at risk. This treatment allows the patient to carry on with daily activities such as exercise, walking and working. What is not allowed is to sunbath the legs or to use any type of elastic support (bandages, stockings or elastic socks).
Hospitalization:
Esclerotherapy is an ambulatory procedure, the patient does not need to stay in bed, is minimally invasive, non-surgical and requires local anesthesia.
CALF IMPLANTS
Calf implant surgery aims to give the calf area the shape and volume it will have when person exercises (biking, steps). Calf muscle implants are fusiform and semisolid, but not rigid.
Benefits:
It is useful for those patients who have suffered some type of congenital malformation or disease (poliomyelitis, neurological problems) or injuries (traumatisms). It is also an option for those who have not developed the muscle or achieved the right curvature for the calf muscle.
Hospitalization:
This is an ambulatory procedure
GLUTEAL IMPLANTS (BUTT IMPLANT)
Gluteus implant as a plastic surgery procedure that uses fat injections to increase the size of buttocks. It is an innovative technique that offers natural and aesthetic results. It is useful for people who want to increase the size of their buttocks but do not require silicone implants (which are also available).
Benefits:
Cosmetic surgery of this type uses fat injections that allow the surgeon to place the needed amount of fat in the areas that so require; this makes it easier to shape the gluteus. Fat injections do not cause rejection, capsule formation, infections or asymmetry that do occur where silicone prosthesis are used. In fact, this technique is widely used instead of silicone implants or prosthesis. Besides, it is a simpler procedure that will not cause post-surgery pain.
Technical Description:
Gluteus enlargement takes out fat from any other part of your body (hips, waist or back) to inject it, through two small incisions, in the buttocks area that needs to be
HAIR REPLACEMENT
Hair implantation is a surgical procedure to transfer hair from one side of the head to another. Even though this procedure is painful and costly, the results are generally permanent.
Technical Description:
Hair transplantation involves relocating (transplanting) bald resistant hair follicles from the back and sides of the head (the donor areas) to a person’s bald or thinning areas. The transplanted hair follicles will typically grow hair for a lifetime because they are genetically resistant to going bald. In recent years hair transplantation techniques have evolved from using large plugs and mini grafts to exclusively using large numbers of small grafts that contain from between 1 to 4 hairs. The grafting may cause localized loss of existing hair, the graft then typically grows in within a year.
Since hair naturally grows in follicles that contain groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today’s most advanced techniques transplant these naturally occurring 1–4 hair follicular units in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair.
Another method is scalp reduction, in which skin in the balding area of the scalp is surgically excised. The left over skin is then pulled together and sutured.
Hospitalization:
Hair implantation is an ambulatory procedure.
HAIR REMOVAL
Depilation using laser is an effective treatment for those who want permanent depilation. It is nowadays a very successful technique. Laser depilation eliminates hair without damaging the skin. Laser hair removal is for those people who want to eliminate hair for comfort or for aesthetic reasons.
Benefits:
Unwanted hair has led people to test several creams and waxes that sometimes do not have the promised effect. The appearance of techniques such as the laser have revolutionized the aesthetic field with solutions to a problem that, sometimes, is not just a body-image issue, but which can become a serious social problem, like in the case of hirsutism.
Technical Description:
This depilation system uses laser (Deodo's LightSheer) that sends light with only one wavelength that can be very selective in the absorbing area. This wavelength is absorbed by the hair's melanin, which is in charge of pigmentation. This allows burning the follicle and the hair's matrix without damaging the skin.
Hospitalization:
Laser depilation requires previous consultation.
Time:
Permanent depilation in any part of the body is not painful and requires an average of 6 sessions.
ABDOMINOPLASTY (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty or lipectomy is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen, and, at the same time, it tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. So, it reduces the protruding of the abdomen.
Benefits:
Abdominoplasty is best for women and men whose body shape has big fat deposits and loose abdominal skin that do not disappear with diets or exercise. The loss of elasticity and the stretching of the skin in women who have had several pregnancies are also conditions where this plastic surgery can help. Those patients who want to lose a lot of weight or women who plan to have more babies should wait a while before undergoing this surgery. Patients who have difficulty in scarring must be aware of the risk of unpleasant scars after abdominoplasty.
Technical Description:
Abdominoplasty is the cosmetic fixing of the abdomen to give it a better shape, specially after dramatic weight gain or loss. Abdominoplasty can help flattening the abdomen, tighten loose skin and strengthen abdominal muscles.
General anaesthesia is used so the patient does not feel any pain. A horizontal incision is made on the abdomen, just above the pubic area. The excess of skin and fat is removed form the abdominal wall, beginning at the pubic area up to the thorax. When this is over, the incision is sutured. It is common to insert some tubes (draining) and leave them there for a few days so fluids can drain. An elastic bandage is then placed around the abdomen. Excess fat and skin from arms and legs can also be removed.
Hospitalization:
From 2 to 3 days, approximately.
Time:
Complete abdominoplasty normally takes a few hours depending on the amount of skin covered.
LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction or lipoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure to extract body fat through small incisions. This procedure does not leave scars in the body. It is the perfect method if you need to remove fat that deforms your body structure.
Benefits:
Liposuction surgery is for those patients who have good health and realistic expectations of the results of this procedure: liposuction offers amazing results but not perfection. Even though age is an important factor in determining who is a good candidate for this surgery, general health conditions are even more important. Ideal candidates are those who have gone on diets and/or exercise plans and still have unattractive body fat. Overweight patients can benefit from this surgery; even though it is not a weight loss treatment, it offers good results. Nevertheless, the ideal condition is a person whose weight is close to normal. There are no age limits for liposuction.
Technical Description:
Liposuction has become the most popular aesthetic surgery procedure. This type of surgery improves the physical appearance of the person and shapes irregular shapes through the elimination of unwanted and excessive fat. It is sometimes called body shaping. Liposuction can mould areas under the chin, neck, cheekbone, the upper arm, breasts, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles.
Hospitalization:
Hospitalization depends on the area treated and degree of surgery.
Time:
The duration of the procedure will vary according to the parts of the body involved; it ranges from one and a half hours to three hours.
Weight loss surgery (Bariatric Surgery)
Weight loss through bariatric surgery is a procedure used with patients who suffer from morbid obesity and is a good weight loss alternative. Morbid obesity is defined as a total weight with more than 100 pounds over ideal weight (or with a body mass index of 40+). Our JCI Accredited Hospital and board certified physicians have ample experience in different surgical treatments for obesity that can satisfy your needs or preferences. We offer you a surgical procedure performed by four skillful and experienced physicians.
LAPAROSCOPIC ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BAND (LAP BAND)
General Description: Lap band weight loss surgery is a restrictive bariatric surgery procedure that limits the gastric capacity so the patient looses weight because of reduced food intake. All patients who undergo bariatric surgery must be aware of pre and post surgery requirements and be sure to fully understand them.
Benefits: Bariatric surgery in the form of laparoscopic weight loss banding, is for patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2+ or those with BMI of 35+ who suffer from obesity-related morbidity. The age range is from 14 to 65, nevertheless, there can be exceptions to this rule.
Advantages of adjustable gastric banding:
- Does not alter gastric anatomy much.
- It is reversible.
- Technically, it is the fastest option.
Some of its disadvantages are:
- Requires adjustment for proper functioning.
- There is no weight loss of more than 70% of excess weight.
Potential complications are:
- Slipping
- Gastric perforation
- Gastric erosion
- Vomiting
- Impossibility to produce restriction
- Impossibility for placing it.
Technical Description: Weight loss surgery of this type (laparoscopic adjustable gastric band) is a procedure to place a devise around the stomach, through laparoscopic surgery, that has an adjustable band with a valve. In this way, the devise limits the amount of food intake and makes the person feel full sooner. Each time the patient eats more than is allowed, some discomfort will be experienced.
Our JCI Accredited Hospital uses a Swedish gastric band (Obtech by Johnson & Johnson), the original devise for this technique.
Hospitalization - One night stay is usually required.
Time - Laparoscopic adjustable banding takes between 45 minutes and two hours.
LAPAROSCOPIC ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS (STOMACH STAPLING)
General Description: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (also known as stomach stapling) is a bariatric surgery procedure considered the golden rule by many. It has a restrictive and malabsortive side to it:
- Surgical stapling limits your gastric intake, so you will lose weight since you will be eating less.
- Intake of some nutrients is limited due to a surgical change in the biliar and pancreatic secretions and their union with food.
All patients who undergone bariatric surgery must be aware of all pre and post surgical requirements, please contact New You Costa Rica for more information.
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a surgery for those who have a body mass index of 40 kg/m2 and higher, or those whose BMI is above 35 and who suffer from comorbidity associated to obesity. The age range is from 14 to 65, nevertheless, there can be exceptions to this rule.
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass has the following advantages:
- It does not require readjustments, only periodical control.
- It is the most common bariatric surgery since weight loss is very successful (close to 80% of excess weight).
Disadvantages are:
- Possibility of surgical complications.
- Occasional vomiting.
- There might be the need for further surgical procedures.
- Irreversible alteration in the gastrointestinal anatomy.
- Needs vitamins after surgery.
Possible complications are:
- Trans and post surgery bleeding
- Anastomotic leakage
- Internal hernia
- Intestinal obstruction
- Pulmonary embolus
- Obesity-related respiratory distress syndrome
- Death
Technical Description: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass reduces the size of the stomach through surgical staling. This type of weight loss surgery cuts the stomach and leaves a reservoir of approximately 30ml. Then, the small intestine is divided to form a "y" and changes the course of secreciones biliopancreaticas and unite the "y" to the gastric reservoir so food follows a different course.
Weight loss surgery of this type performs gastrointestinal cuts and unions and could eventually cause "leaks". This is a risk involved in this type of surgery. After surgery, the patient must follow special diets and vitamin intake to lose weight properly.
Hospitalization - Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass requires 4 nights hospitalization.
Time - Between an hour and a half and four hours.
BILIOPANCREATIC DEVIATION
General Description: Biliopancreatic diversion is a malabsorsive bariatric surgery procedure: the absorption of some nutrients decreases because the passage of biliar and pancreatic secretions is altered. There could also be duodenal change. Weight loss surgery patients must be aware of pre and post surgery requirements.
Benefits: Bariatric surgery of this type can be performed on patients who have body mass index (BMI) of 50 kg/m2 and above. The age range is from 14 to 65, nevertheless, there can be exceptions to this rule.
Biliopancreatic diversion offers the following advantages:
- This type of surgery is advisable for patients with extreme obesity and BMI of 50 kg/m2 +.
- Weight loss is over 90% of excess, nevertheless, the majority of patients suffer from frequent diarrhea.
Some of its disadvantages:
- Frequent diarrhea.
- Flatulencies.
- Some cases of malnutrition.
Potential complications involved are:
- Trans and post surgery bleeding.
- Anastomotic leakage.
- Internal hernia.
- Intestinal obstruction.
- Pulmonary embolus
- Obesity-related respiratory distress syndrome
- Death
Technical Description: Biliopancreatic diversion reduces the stomach, but not as much as in bypass surgery. The small intestine is cut and put back together in a way to have food and secretions unite in a common one-meter handle before they reach the colon. Sometimes, poor nutrient intake can result, which in turn causes diarrhea and flatulency in some patients.
Hospitalization - Biliopancreatic diversion requires you to stay four nights at the hospital.
Time - Between two and a half and four and a half hours.
SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY
General Description: Sleeve gastrectomy as weight loss surgery is a relatively new procedure that is rapidly gaining popularity due to the many advantages it offers over other weight loss surgery procedures. It is currently indicated as an alternative to the Lap-Band® procedure for low weight individuals and as a safe option for higher weight individuals.
The Sleeve Gastrectomy allows any BMI patient to undergo weight loss surgery laparoscopically. Most patients with a BMI under 60 kg/m2 achieve successful, effective weight loss in a manner similar to the gastric bypass or duodenal switch. Some patients with much higher BMI may need a second stage to the procedure, again performed laparoscopically at a later date. Most patients can lose 75 to 80% of their excess body weight over 6-12 months with sleeve gastrectomy alone. Weight loss surgery patients must be aware of pre and post surgery requirements.
The sleeve gastrectomy offers the following advantages:
- It does not require disconnecting or reconnecting the intestines.
- It is a technically simpler operation than the gastric bypass or the duodenal switch
- It may be a safer operation for patients with a body mass index (BMI) more than 60. To figure out your BMI.
- Does not require periodic maintenance such as tightening and refills as in the case of the gastric band.
Disadvantages are:
- Some higher BMI patients may need to have a second stage procedure later to help lose the rest of the weight.
- Because the stomach is removed, it is not reversible.
Potential complications are: Like any surgical operation, sleeve gastrectomy has possible complications, such as leakage, dilation of the sleeve (which allows for more food intake) and other usual complications associated with bariatric surgery, though the risks are known to be much lower than the gastric bypass and duodenal switch.
Technical Description: Weight loss treatment is achieved solely through gastric restriction (reduced stomach volume). The stomach is restricted by stapling and dividing it vertically and removing more than 85% of it. This part of the procedure is not reversible. The stomach that remains is shaped like a very slim banana and measures from 1-5 ounces (30-150cc), depending on the surgeon performing the procedure.
Hospitalization - The sleeve gastrectomy procedure usually requires one night in the hospital and five days recovery in a hotel or recovery retreat before the patient can fly home.
Time - 2 hours

HIP REPLACEMENT
General Description: Hip replacement or complete hip replacement is a surgical orthopedic procedure to change the hip's articulation using an artificial devise (prosthesis) to restore joint movement. All patients who undergo hip replacement must be aware of pre and post-surgery requirements.
Benefits: This orthopedic surgery is usually performed in older patients. It is not recommended for younger ones because of the tension the artificial hip receives.
Some reasons to consider hip replacement are:
- Pain in the hip that does not respond to traditional treatment (AINE non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs during six or more months).
- Osteoarthritis or hip arthritis diagnosed through radiography.
- Incapacity to work, sleep or move around due to pain.
- Loose hip prosthesis.
- Some hip fractures.
- Tumors in the hip articulation.
This surgery is not advised on the following cases:
- Current hip infection.
- Lack of enough tissue covering hip.
- Quad muscles paralysis.
- Severe disease in the leg and feet's blood vessels ( Peripheral Vascular Diseases)
- Nervous disease (neuropathy) that affects the hip.
- Severe mental dysfunction.
- Serious physical condition (terminal disease such as when there is metastasis).
- Morbid obesity (over 136 k or 300 pounds)
Hospitalization - Orthopedic surgery to perform hip replacements requires you to stay at the hospital for 3 days.
Time - Surgery takes approximately 3 hours.
Extremity - arms
SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY
General Description: Orthopedic surgery of this type is perform to examine or repair the tissue inside or around the shoulder joint. There are some pre-surgical tests required and your doctor will review these depending on your particular situation. If you suffer from a particular condition, additional related tests must be performed prior to your surgery.
Benefits: Shoulder arthroscopy allows the physician to visualize, through small incisions, two anatomical areas: the joint itself and the subacromial space.
Technical Description: This type of orthopedic surgery follows a procedure that uses a camera called arthroscopy, inserted in the body through a small incision. If the doctor has to repair a joint, he will also use small surgical instruments.
Hospitalization - Shoulder arthroscopy does not generally require you to stay overnight in the hospital.
Time - Shoulder arthroscopy takes around 2 hours to complete.
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
General Description: Orthopedic surgery of this sort alleviates carpal tunnel syndrome. It is caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. The tunnel is a narrow space. The median nerve gives the thumb and three middle fingers movement and sensibility. If it is damaged, it can cause many symptoms. It is necessary to have an electromyography or pre-surgery nerve conduction speed evaluation, as well as basic medical checkup.
Benefits: Orthopedic surgery will correct your carpal tunnel syndrome and your hand will recover its sensibility and strength.
Technical Description: Orthopedic surgery required to cure carpal tunnel syndrome is ambulatory and performed under local or general anesthesia. The orthopedic surgeon will open a small incision in the wrist, then, he will cut the tissue that presses the nerves to alleviate pain. After surgery, the wrist must be immobilized in a splint to bring the nerves back to normal. Usually, the splint is used all the time during the first two weeks, then once in a while the following month. It is common to experience moderate pain after surgery; medication will take care of that. Surgeons recommend keeping the hand up while sleeping.
Recovery will vary in each case. If the syndrome has been present for a long time, recovery might take longer. Moving your fingers and wrist a few days after surgery can help prevent stiffness.
Hospitalization - CTS surgery is an ambulatory procedure.
Time -Carpal tunnel surgery takes about 30 minutes.
BUNIONS
General Description: A bunion (hallux valgus) is a first or second toe deformity that results in the big toe pointing towards the outside of the foot. They are caused by several factors, including inflammatory rheumatism or other foot diseases (flat feet, hollow feet); nevertheless, hereditary factors seem to be the main cause. Women are more likely than men to develop bunions. High heels (over 4 cm) or narrow shoes in the rear foot area are aggravating factors.
Orthopedic surgery of this type is not recommended for aesthetic purposes. If bunions are not painful and do not interfere with shoes, it is better not to have surgery. You must keep in mind that each person needs a specific type of shoe according to her/his own characteristics. It is useless to try to fit a big foot in a narrow shoe.
Benefits: Orthopedic surgery for bunions is advisable in case of pain or when the bunion interferes with normal walking.
Technical Description: There are over 200 surgical treatments for bunions. The surgeon will evaluate your toe deformity, age and causes to choose the best option. Percutaneous surgery is an innovative technique. Even though it requires more tests, the results are promising. This type of orthopedic surgery consists in opening small incisions to get rid of the lump of bone. It is an outpatient procedure (the patient does not need to be admitted to a hospital) performed under local anesthetic. Other non-surgical treatments are also useful with bunions. In some cases, all it takes is wearing customized orthopedic inner soles.
Hospitalization - You will need to remain at the hospital for 24 hours.
Time - Bunion surgery lasts from 45 minutes to an hour
KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY
General Description: Orthopedic knee replacement surgery is often recommended for patients with severe arthritis or another debilitating knee condition. During this procedure, an orthopedic surgeon will cut away damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replace it with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
Benefits: Knee replacement can be performed under certain circumstances. Generally, patients who suffer from ostearthrosis who also show the following:
- Daily pain.
- Pain interferes with job, recreational activities and daily chores.
- Considerable stiffness.
- Instability.
- Considerable deformity.
Orthopedic surgery to replace the knee seeks to alleviate pain. An artificial knee is not a normal knee, but it can make all the difference between a limiting lifestyle and a fully enjoyable life without movement restrictions.
Technical Description: The prosthesis used in this orthopedic surgery is made up of several parts:
- A metallic part adjusted to the femur.
- A smaller metallic part adjusted to the tibia where a high-density polyethylene spacer will be placed to function as the new joint's cartridge.
- A circular polyethylene part to replace the the undersurface of the kneecap.
Knee replacement takes around two hours, and is usually performed under spinal anesthesia. The idea of undergoing this type of surgery can be scary, but it is one of the safest orthopedic procedures nowadays.
Hospitalization - Orthopedic knee replacement surgery requires a two day hospital stay and an additional seven days at a recovery hotel.
Time - Knee replacement surgery takes approximately two hours.
KNEE CRUCIATE LIGAMENT
General Description: Orthopedic surgery repairs the knee cruciate ligament through arthroscopy; that is, the use of cameras and microscopic instruments in large and narrow tubes to alleviate knee problems. Small incisions are made. Usually, joint problems are a result of sport practice.
Benefits: Knee surgery is performed in the following cases:
- A torn meniscus.
- A damaged bone (la kneecap or patella).
- A damaged ligament.
- Inflamed or damaged lining of the joint (synovium).
Arthroscopy is also used to look inside the knee while ligaments and tendons are being repaired from outside.
Technical Description: Knee surgery is performed through small punctures in the joints while you are asleep and not feeling pain (under general anesthesia). The camera (arthroscopy) and instruments are placed in the knee articulation. This allows the surgeon to observe the ligaments, meniscus, bone (patella) and the lining of the joint (synovium). Damaged tissues are then removed.
Hospitalization - Knee surgery is an ambulatory procedure.
Time - Ligament repair surgery takes around 2 hours.
KNEE ARTHROSCOPY
General Description: Arthroscopic orthopedic surgery involves inserting a small camera, into the knee joint through a small incision to look around the entire knee for problem areas.
Generally, you can leave the hospital 24 hours after surgery. Recovery time and the need for physiotherapy are determined according the damage and the results of the procedure.
Hospitalization - Does not require hospitalization.
Time - Arthroscopy lasts from 45 minutes to an hour

REFRACTIVE SURGERY (LASIK)
General Description:
Refractive surgery (LASIK) is a sight improving procedure that does not call for the use of glasses or contact lenses. It is necessary to know that the eye works as a camera. The eye has 2 lenses, cornea and crystalline, which focus the images in the retina (which would be like film). This process to refract the light and images is called refraction. For images to be properly focused in the retina, both lenses must offer a clear image; is the image is projected before of after the retina or it is deformedly projected, it would cause refraction defects, such as shortsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Currently, there is the possibility of using laser called EXCIMER to correct refraction defects. Even long-sightedness can be treated, depending on the patient. Each patient's refraction problems are unique, so it is like a digital imprint that calls for a personalized treatment called personalized LASIK, performed using FRENTE DE ONDA technology.
Benefits:
No need to wear glasses or contacts depending on your individual case.
Technical Description:
This procedure only requires topic anesthesia. A small corneal flap is used to apply excimer laser depending on the patient's needs.
Hospitalization:
It does not need hospitalization.
Time:
Surgery takes approximately 10 minutes
